National Trails Day 2017 Events

National Trails Day is June 3, 2017

This Saturday is National Trails Day, and there’s no shortage of outdoor activities happening in the area. Here are some trail-related events you might want to check out:

Family Trail Hike in Baxter Village

Launch into summer with a fun and fulfilling morning out on the trail! Each year for the past 5 years the Baxter Trail Club, supported by funds raised at our New Year’s Day Trail Runs, hosts Baxter and area families on a guided hike from Allison Park along the Carolina Thread Trail all the way down to the Catawba River where you’ll get to enjoy some snacks and refreshments before hiking home or catching a ride on the big wagon!  The wagon will start running an hour earlier this year so those on a tighter schedule can get home sooner. 8 AM at the Baxter Community Center.
More info in their newsletter, and on Facebook.

Summer Kick-Off & National Trails Day at Anne Springs Close Greenway

Enjoy a day full of hikes, animal encounters and raffles for the whole family! There will be a DJ on site and prizes raffled away every 30 minutes! Activities will center around the renovated Nature Center and will feature food trucks and a picnic area and will last until 2p. Don’t forget to check out our new “Discovery Agent” mobile app. Free Admission for the whole family! 10 AM – 2 PM.

National Trails Day Festival at South Fork Trail and River

Carolina Thread Trail is hosting a free festival to celebrate National Trails Day on June 3! Visit the South Fork Trail and River in McAdenville, NC from 10am-2pm for a day of guided nature hikes, free kayak rentals, yoga on the lawn, geocaching, Mayobird food truck, Blue Blaze Brewery, White Water Bluegrass Band with Anthony Scruggs, nature activities and outdoor exhibitors. 10 AM – 2 PM.

Blue Blaze Brewing One Year Anniversary

One of Charlotte’s newest breweries is celebrating a birthday! I guess it’s kind of a stretch to call it a trail event, but their name does refer to the blazes often painted on trees to mark trails, and they have been known to sponsor trail events in Charlotte, so … good enough. There will be beer, food trucks, bands, and other fun throughout the day. 12 PM – 10 PM.

Trails for Education

Paid a visit to the nature trail at GHMS recently and got a tour from Mrs Taylor. It’s a great area, with lots of opportunities to teach and show kids things like animal habitats, water and erosion, and more. It’s a great resource!

There are some opportunities for trail projects here, as some of their bridges have ben displaced by heavy rains, and the original blazes on the trees have faded, making it difficult to follow the trail.

When the new Tega Cay elementary school is completed, I hope some of our nearby trails might be used in the same way.

Brought our trail map up to date, with the removal of the trails lost to the new elementary school construction, and the addition of Will Frost’s Eagle Scout trail (between Calloway Pines and Windjammer) and the nearly-complete Turner Field to Heron Harbor trail.
